Position: Director of Discipleship

To champion the engagement of our church in our discipleship pathway “The Journey” and to nurture people into their next steps of growth and commitment to God through his local church

Qualifications:

A Bachelors degree is recommended with a Ministry/Theological emphasis preferable but not required. Practical experience in personal discipleship, team building and helping people grow in their relationship with God, who then in turn help others do the same.

Objectives:

1. Direct and implement our discipleship pathway into every facet of our church.

2. Champion the Mobilization of the Congregation and Team Building with our Staff and Ministry Leaders.

3. Develop and oversee our Missional Initiatives Team in all aspects of local, national, and global mission.

Competencies:

The Director of Discipleship should:

• Profess a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

• Manage time efficiently and effectively, with a strong emphasis on effective organizational and planning skills.

• Demonstrate an ability to build teams and provide leadership that encourages continual growth and. improvement.

• Possess strong interpersonal skills, which include: compassion, sensitivity, and recognition of non-verbal indicators within a conversation.

• Develop and maintain trusting relationships as well as being trustworthy.

• Exhibit leadership and an ability to organize people and events to complete tasks.

• Work independently and interdependently (team player).

• Display flexibility in dealing with change and seeing multiple perspectives.

• Demonstrate self-motivation, follow through and task completion.

• Show a sense of reliability and availability.

• Manage personal finances in a God honoring way while practicing the Biblical Tithe.

• Practice self-care, through personal daily devotion and prayer, regular worship attendance, commitment to a Life Group, and taking regular family days.

• Participation in Continuing Education opportunities.

The responsibilities of this position are as follows:

1. Direct and implement our discipleship pathway into every facet of our church.

Work with our Senior Pastor, Lead Team and Discipleship Team

. a. to implement our Vision, Mission, core values into our discipleship pathway.
b. Work alongside the Senior Pastor to create pathways that engage all levels of congregational faith development to integrate weekly messages and teaching.
c. Help our congregation go beyond Sunday mornings in their spiritual growth in Christ.
d. Encourage, train and equip the congregation to enter into personal discipleship relationships with one another.
e. Oversee all aspects of our discipleship pathway ministries and teams while working alongside, coaching and nurturing ministry/team leaders toward planning, organization and development.

2. Champion the Mobilization of the Congregation and Team Building with our Staff and Ministry Leaders.

a. Identify opportunities and implement processes within our discipleship pathway that engage our church to serve inside and outside the church.
b. Help people discover, get excited about and deploy their spiritual gifts.
c. Support our Staff and Ministry Leaders in recruiting and building teams of volunteers.
d. Model the building and nurturing of discipleship relationships that encourages serving together in ministry and mission.

3. Develop and oversee our Missional Initiatives Team in all aspects of local, national, and global mission.

a. Work with our Missional Initiatives Team to energize our church in local outreach and global mission opportunities.
b. Guide the process of discerning which outreach and mission opportunities are best for our church to undertake.
c. Be the point of contact for our local, national and international outreach and mission partners.
d. Oversee and care for our missionaries, mission partners, short-term mission trips, and local outreach opportunities.

Reporting Relationships/Supervision:

This position is amenable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee per the Discipline of the United Methodist Church. The work schedule is dependent on the volume of ministry and whether this position is part-time or full-time (minimum 25 hours). This includes regular staff meetings and other team meetings. This is a team position. It is important that the duties of this position be carried out in a cooperative and helpful manner relative to other staff of the Rolling Plains UMC and relative to members, constituents and visitors of Rolling Plains. The official policies for employment are contained in the Rolling Plains Employee handbook. The supervisor to whom this position reports is: The Senior Pastor. Performance reviews will take place yearly.
